For those of you yet to experience the wonders of a DVR (are you living in a cave?) I am selling our old ReplayTV box on eBay. The beauty of this system is that it can be used with just about any cable, satellite, or standard TV setup, as long as you activate and pay the monthly $12.95 fee for the programming guide. We loved this system, but currently Comcast offers a built in DVR for cheaper than $12.95, so we switched over to that.

We used our DVR to tape American Idol last night and zoom through the 2 hour show in less than an hour and a half, just by skipping the commercials. I’m still a fan of Chris Sligh even though I had no idea what song he was singing. I also think that Blake Lewis is going to do really well in the competition as well. I though the show was a little below average when compared to past seasons, but it was just the first real episode. The girls will be singing tonight. Be sure to check out the early predictions on DialIdol.com, if you want to ruin the surprise all season.

does your new dvr connect to the net so you can pull stuff off the hard drive.

It has an Ethernet port on the back, but I’ve read that it’s disabled by Comcast. I have not tried it. Does your box connect or does it have a port?

I just found a sweet hack to add the 30 second skip to my remote. This was one feature that I was really missing from the ReplayTV.

i believe time warner has disabled the network connection as well on our box (scientific atlanta explorer 8300hd). that 30 second skip feature is pretty cool, i’ll have to get tim to work on that for us :)

hahah, welcome to the dvr world. we’ve had ours since we moved here in April of ’05. We’ve got the HD DVR because of the new TV we got last year. Amazing. and we have the same 8300 as Ed sr. and no, it’s not functional yet. you have to get an HD PC card and run one of your cable connections through that and then either burn it, watch it on the PC or s-video it over.

that dialidol software is interesting. we’ve never actually called in for anyone, but i wonder if it works with cable where you don’t have a phone line or modem?

the guys are in trouble because there’s many more talented girls. we can watch the 2 hour show in an 1 hour 10-15.

I first used the ReplayTV in late 2004, so we are no rookies to DVR. :) We also have an HD DVR, even though we don’t have an HDTV, yet. I have to finish the basement first.

I don’t think the DialIdol software would work without a phone line, at least according to their requirements it won’t. I’ve never voted either and I can’t see myself ever doing it. I just enjoy reality TV, I guess. The predictions on DialIdol were pretty close to being right. As the show goes on, they will only get more accurate.
