I’m getting the travel bug again and I’ve started looking into an anniversary trip for Kim and I.  Last year we headed to Alaska to celebrate our first year together as a married couple.  This year I’m hoping to get to Yellowstone and other surrounding areas, including Grand Teton and parts of Montana.  I’ve started today by searching for available lodging inside Yellowstone.  It looks like we should spend a night near Old Faithful, and a few other nights elsewhere in the park, likely near the Canyon Village.  We may have started planning this a little too late, as many of the rooms are already filled, but I’m hopeful that we can find sometime in September to make the trip work.  What I’m looking for are suggestions for where we should stay, and for how many nights.  I’m not sure many readers have been to the area, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

    Hey, there.

You are likely to have some trouble finding a place to stay at Old Faithful during September, but you might get lucky in some other places in the park. The later in September you go the more likely you are to find a place to stay. With the size of the park it’s usually a good idea to stay in one or two different places.

Let me encourage you to visit the Yellowstone Net forums (forums.yellowstone.net). You can read through a lot of the material there and ask any questions you’d like. Of course my web site has some information as well, but the forums will allow you to interact with others who’ve been there and can provide their own personal perspective on ideas and whatnot.

If this will be your first trip there, I can promise you it will be an experience you’ll never forget.

Late September still has plenty of openings around Old Faithful. Just trying to decide how many days to stay in the park. Thanks for the link and info.

No way. I had to reply to this since we just got back a few weeks ago from the same trip. Are you driving or flying? We just “motelled” it. Are you set on accommodations within the park boundaries? We stayed in Jackson, WY at the Virginian Lodge for 3 days to do Grand Teton Park. Cool little old fashioned inn. We went through Yellowstone to Gardiner, MT at a Travelodge chain. We had no problem doing day trips (even with 4 kids ages 3-11 in the car!) through the park from Gardiner, although we could have stayed one more night to get to everything in Yellowstone…
Kim may feel a little more ill at the smells coming from the ground, though!
There you have my 2 cents and have fun. It is SO beautiful and great hiking!

We haven’t decided yet, but I think we are going to drive. It’s less than 10 hours from here. We haven’t booked anything yet but are looking at the Old Faithful Inn and the Canyon Lodge inside of Yellowstone. I think we will also spend some nights in Jackson, so I’ll check out the Virginian Lodge. How long did you stay near Yellowstone? I’m thinking we will do 3 nights there.

we stayed 3 nights in gardiner which gave us 3 days in yellowstone. We wish we did 4 since the park is so huge. We visited the town of west yellowstone, too and that town had some better hotel\motel chains. We went inside the old faithful lodge to use the restrooms and it was really nice. Very charming.
