Today is Ash Wednesday, the start of the Lenten season.  Traditionally, it is the day to officially give something up for forty days.  Unfortunately I don’t have any good ideas for myself.  I can’t think of too many vices that I could easily do away with.  I don’t really snack or eat chocolate.  I’m not a big soda drinker and haven’t been drinking caffeine much at all recently.  I feel like those are the big items that most people usually fall back on, but none of them really apply.  A cousin of mine is giving up alcohol, but I’m already drinking much less than I had previously.  I don’t really want to cut it out completely, especially with my 30th birthday falling before Easter.  So, does anyone else have any good ideas or want to comment on what they are giving up?  I haven’t eaten meat today, which is not normally a tradition I take part in.  Maybe I’ll actually give up meat on Fridays for once, though that’s a bunch of pizza between now and Easter.

You can always do something special rather than give something up… that’s what I do! I don’t listen to the radio in the car while driving to work and pray during that time and I’m also going to try and go to church every sunday during lent. I’ve also tried doing something nice every day for someone … I’ve done that too!

Good point, mom. Doing something might be easier than giving something up. Are you still going to St. Columban for mass? I’d probably go more if I found someplace I liked as much as St. Francis Seraph. I know I won’t make it every Sunday, but I may try going to some local churches this lent. And I’m thinking of something good I could do for 40 days straight.

I wish St France Seraph was closer to our house too! We do go to St Columban when we go but we haven’t been in awhile… it was my new year’s resolution too which I didn’t accomplish!

I’m giving up going out to eat, unless it is to entertain women. I did this last year and pretty much kept the habit of packing my lunch every day, whereas i used to go out to lunch all the time.

Nice work, Roy. I pack my lunch pretty much every day and cook most meals at home, but there is no way I could completely give up going out to eat. For starters, we are secret shopping at a restaurant tomorrow evening. Good luck to you!

  4. I’m giving up on giving up things.

I am giving up one second of oxygen per 40 days of lent. I may go crazy and give up all 40 seconds of it now.

How about a food donation to your local food bank. A lot of people are out of work and they are all low on food. Just a thought!

Just don’t give up snowboarding before I come visit!

What about doing some kind of volunteer work instead of giving something up?

I gave up alcohol, but with a special-occasion-exception to have a glass of wine when we go to Duo for restaurant week. Are exception days really in the spirit of Lent? Not sure. What about giving up something like sleeping in? But I would guess you don’t do that much anyway!

Food donations sound great, as does volunteering. I’ll have to think more about these options. Thanks for the ideas. Who would have thought a religious based post would be so popular.
