On Saturday night, we did another thing that we’ve wanted to do, attend a roller derby bout.  The bout took place at the Fillmore Auditorium, which is normally a large concert hall.  Though a majority of the floor was occupied by the track, somehow the event sold-out.  Normally, the capacity of the Fillmore is 3,700 people, and though I’m sure there weren’t nearly that many attendees, it was still a pretty big crowd.  Much larger than I was anticipating.

The match-up for the night featured two Denver based teams, both part of the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls, The Sugar Kill Gang and The Dooms Daisies.  It all started around 7pm with Elvis singing the national anthem.  They provided a couple of rules over the loudspeakers, and also a very short general description inside of the program.  We had to figure out most of it as the bout proceeded.  One thing that was quickly apparent was that The Sugar Kill Gang was the far superior team.  After a close start between the two teams, they managed to build a double-digit lead rather quickly.

Overall, I was pretty entertained by the event, though I don’t think it was quite worth the $20 ticket price.  I would consider going again for a lower amount, but I’d much rather watch a concert for that price.  I can buy tickets for a professional lacrosse team for much less than the price for this amateur event.  though I have to admit that they must be doing something right if they can bring in a sellout crowd at the Fillmore.

I’m glad you guys went to a derby game! I’m doing derby now in Kansas City and I love it. I can say, as far as the ticket price, most leagues are very DIY sort of operations and frankly, it costs a lot of money to rent out a place like the Fillmore or Municipal auditorium here, especially when you do take up so much space with the track. You guys should definitely go again!

I saw that you were doing derby now, good for you. I understand that it takes money to rent out places, but I feel like it is the same as charging people $20 to come watch me play hockey. I guess the difference is that no one would do that. If I went again, I think I’d have to wait for two teams from opposing cities to meet. This match didn’t seem as intense as I had hoped, though that’s likely due to the 100 point scoring margin.

Fair enough. And I agree that $20 is pretty steep especially for one bout. When we have stuff at Municipal tickets are $16 but there are two bouts that night so it’s a 3 hour event. And matches where the all star team plays a different city are usually more interesting.

I thought Kim would be skating

  4. You can buy advance tickets directly from a league member for $17. Our prices did go up a bit with our move to the Fillmore, but we are hearing from many fans that the $2 price bump was worth it for the new venue.

As you noted, the point spread was significant. The Sugars boast one of the best players in the nation, DeRanged. I recommend that you return on March 6 when De will skate against her sister, Psycho Babble, who is right on par with her. Both are on RMRG’s all-star 5280 Fight Club. The Daisies were down a major player on Feb. 6, sadly, and one of our stars who was playing was very, very sick and is recovering from having pins removed from her ankle. We apologize that our showing was not better.

Thanks for the pricing feedback. We take seriously the feelings from the fans. Again, cheaper tickets directly from the league. Fan us on Facebook for ways and means … http://www.facebook.com/pages/Rocky-Mountain-Rollergirls/335408560064?ref=ts

There are also derby tutorials online.

Sorry if it’s odd to hear directly from us … Google alert and all.
