I’ve been making some small changes to my site design, though they may be going mostly unnoticed. First, I added a background to the sidebar on the right side of the page. I think it helps tie in the header design into the side. Now I may end up doing something similar with the footer. I also added a Twitter section to the sidebar. I’ve found myself using the site more and more, and figured I should post my updates to my website, since it’s so easy to do. If you aren’t already, be sure to follow me.

Finally, I added a few more little icons to the site. This was supposed to be another easy task, but as I got into it I discovered some issues. All of the little icons used on the site come from the the silk icon collection in .png format. This works perfectly on Firefox, Opera, and other good browsers. They actually work okay in Internet Explorer 7 and up, it’s in earlier versions where the problem lies. The transparent background does not work with the earlier versions of IE, and though I found some solutions online, none of them worked completely for me. So instead of wasting more time with that, I converted all of the icons to .gif files, which are displayed fine by all browsers. However, this doesn’t mean that those using IE 6 shouldn’t update. If you won’t move over to Firefox, at least update to IE 7. You can thank me later.

You just described my annoyances for the past 2 years dealing with IE6 … We have had to make two different stylesheets just because IE6 was completely different than any other browser when coding. I think from now on if I create a website, I will just have the code check if you are using IE6 and if you are, a pop up message should appear and just has some text that says, please update your browser and link them to the IE7 or IE8 upgrade. It would make life much easier for all of us developers if everyone would just stop using IE6 or less!

ps: nice blog! I am thinking about helping Chris make one of his own

I almost went with two separate stylesheets to solve the transparency issue, but figured converting everything over to gif was easier. However, I could see the need for having two for more intense layouts.

Sorry for not noticing, I must confess I follow on Google reader so I rarely see the actual page. I hope all is well with you guys, we’re moving back to KC, so perhaps we’ll see you soon. :)

I’m a big time google reader user. So I often don’t visit sites too often, unless their feed doesn’t publish full articles (which I hate!)

Moving back to the states? Hopefully you enjoyed your time living overseas.
