Has anyone every hung anything on a brick wall before? As you may or may not know, our house has a number of exposed brick walls, and I’d like to hang some things on these walls. I’ve been researching my options online, and I think I will have to drill into the wall and put special hooks into the wall for this. The only question that remains is if I should put the hooks in the bricks or into the mortar. I’ve read differing opinions online, and was hoping someone had first hand experience.

i don’t think i have every drilled into a brick, i have always drilled into the mortar. i always thought the brick was too hard to drill…

I’ve drilled into the brick in our house with the concrete bits, but you can run into some that are too hard. I drilled a hole on each side of that door going into the TV room; One side went fine, the other side I went through two bits and finally called it good enough. Weird.

The mortar on these walls is thick enough between bricks that I’ll probably go for that first. Do you think a regular drill bit can drill into it or do I need a special bit?

    Hi Ed,

You need a special drill bit for drilling into the mortar.
I went to Lowe’s and got one so I could hang some pictures on my fireplace. It’s a masonary bit. If you have a lot to do you will want to get a hammer drill it makes the job go so much faster. And it will go into the brick.

Cool. I need to get some hooks anyway so I’ll ask the hardware guys for the proper bit. I’m only going to make 4 holes max, so I’ll just give it a shot with my drill first. Thanks for all of the advice!
