It’s official, we are now second time home owners! Late yesterday we finally closed on the house I talked about long. Our furniture was delivered today and therefore we’ll be pretty busy the next week or so. It’s nice to have all the worries and troubles out of the way. I’m finally really excited about the house once again!

I do have one more issue to figure out, cable service. Fortunately Time Warner doesn’t exist here, but unfortunately Comcast does. So far I’m not sure which is worse. Anyway, I’m pretty sure we’ll end up with digital cable package and DVR. So the question now remains, what about internet service? It appears that they try to get you to lease your modem for $3/month, at least Time Warner gave you one to use for free. So now I’m thinking of buying my own cable modem, the Motorola SURFBoard SB5101 or SB5120. Does anyone own either of these? Once I get that, the service should be pretty good. Their standard connection is 6 Mbps and you can pay $10 extra for 8 Mbps. I’m still undecided on that as well. I better make up my mind soon as my home office depends on it.

Oh goodie, another post in the tech section.  I would vote against the $10 upgrade for 8 meg…  I guess they aren’t giving you any more up speed for that?  Probably the only difference you would see for your ten bucks is if you were downloading the latest greatest Linux image or something.  I bet all those cables modems are close to the same but who knows;  Sounds like buying it is the way to go though.  This d-link is on sale and it seems pretty popular.

Actually the 8 meg package does increase the upload by quite a bit.

Comcast offers a 6 Mbps download and 384 Kbps upload speeds as their base offering and for $10/mo more, you can get 8 Mbps / 768Kbps.

$10 might be worth the double upload speed.

I’ll check the compatibility on that modem, thanks. I’m bidding one of the Motorola’s on eBay right now.

can’t you get harris to pay for your internet connection, they should be willing to pay for some part of it. let me know how everything goes, i might be interested in switching down the road. by the way, time warner doesn’t give you anything for free, i’m sure the cost of the modem is built into their monthly fee :)

OK now that’s a different story… 768k would cut my annual download time of the NOW CD in 1/2!!!  Well worth the cost.

I still haven’t heard anything about them paying for a phone, so I doubt they are going to do much with the Internet. Once I’m at home without a phone I’m sure something will be done quickly. However, the “triple play” package that Comcast has with phone service is a little tempting as it drastically reduces the price of all services for 1 year. I’m still holding out on a cell phone though. Does Comcast offer service in Cincy?

Update: I’ve actually had very positive conversations with the Comcast folks so far. I ordered a digital cable package + HD DVR at a 3 month special of $59.99, including HBO. Of course this price jumps to over $85 after the three months, but we can decide whats worth it after that.

I’m still having some problems getting the Internet setup. Right now Circuit City has a better promotion than Comcast themselves have. You can get 6 months of service for $19.99 and get the Motorola cable modem for free after rebates. Plus they will give you a Circuit City gift card valued up to $150! The problem for me is that the old account from the prior owner is still showing as active for Circuit City, so I cannot setup my own service. I guess I’ll just give it a couple more days…

Emily’s company pays for our telephone and internet because she is a remote worker. it’s very common that they pay at least some.

and something happened to our internet recently. there was a power outage that required us to call TW and have them reset something from their side. ever since then, we’ve had the 8mb package. i can tell you that a 700mb :coughmoviecough: is downloaded in less than 15 minutes.

That’s impressive! Comcast’s big claim is their PowerBoost system which is supposed to automatically double download speed when downloading large files. We’ll see how true that really is…
