It looks as if I may have praised the window air conditioner unit a day too soon. Kim got back to KC yesterday a little before I was off work. She fired up the unit and noticed that it wasn’t putting out cold air. The fan was blowing out, but the air coming out didn’t feel any cooler than when the unit was set to fan only. She shut the door and waited until I finally got home from work. We opened the door to the office only to realize that the room did not feel cool. I think the temperature got up to almost 90 degrees in the room, so something is definitely not working.

Can these things be serviced? Is it even worth it, or should we just suck it up and buy another one? I’m not even sure where this unit came from. It could be 20+ years old for all I know. Back to the drawing board, I guess.

Luckily the outside temperature shouldn’t go above the 80s today. As long as the rain stays away this is shaping up to be a great night!

bummer ed… I don’t think it is real old. Grandpa used it at his apartment, Tim used it at UD and I know it was working then. Maybe Dad has some advice…

bummer about the a/c, i guess we should have tested it. i think its been sitting in the basement for over 2 years so the dampness might have gotten to it. you might want to give it a good smack on the sides to see if that helps. sometimes when compressors sit for a while they get stuck and just need a swift kick. not sure if the compessor is close enough to the side or not so you might actually have to take the cover off. if that doesn’t work, it probably isn’t worth trying to get fixed, sorry…

It was working for a day or so and really seemed to be putting out some cold air. I’ve tried giving it a rest to see if that fixes it but haven’t had any luck yet. I guess I’ll try whacking it a few times tonight to see if that does anything. Good suggestion! I’m good at that. :) I’m not giving up on it just yet.

well if it was working then it might need a cleaning. not sure how to clean one of these, i have never had one before. it might be worth taking the cover off if it looks easy.

I found some cleaning directions online. It may have to wait for the weekend though. If the “beat down” doesn’t work tonight, that will be the next step.

It might need freon???? The Ronster might be able to add that if it is similar to older cars. Don’t know where you can buy it but he probably has an underground connection somewhere.

I haven’t had a chance to knock it around, but I plan to do so this weekend. I’ll try and take it apart to clean as well. If none of that works we’ll have to pursue other options.

    Have you tried rebooting it?

  9. edpaffjr says:

Yeah I think so. That’s what you get when unplugging and plugging back in, right? Next we are gonna try “reformatting.”
