Kim and I headed to Red Rocks last night for yet another sold out show. This was not your typical show though, everyone was there to watch Wedding Crashers on a screen that nearly filled up the stage. I was floored that Red Rocks could sell out just for a movie showing. There was a band on before the movie named Under A Blood Red Sky. Obviously they are a U2 cover band, but I don’t think many people were there actually to see them. In fact many people around us were annoyed by their performance. I didn’t think they were bad, but definitely no comparison to the real thing. As expected, the movie was a huge success and it was amazing to hear seven or eight thousand people all laughing at the same time.

On my flight to Indy Tuesday night, I bit the bullet and paid $8 to watch Blades of Glory (IMDb page). I wasn’t expecting much, but the movie was actually pretty funny. Jon Heder, the guy who played Napolean Dynamite, wasn’t funny at all and I did expect that. But on the other hand, Will Ferrell was hilarious at times. I don’t think it’s in the theaters anymore, but if you haven’t seen the movie I’d say it’s worth the rental price after August 28th. I’d give it one and a half thumbs up.
Sorry for the late in the day post. I wanted to get this up earlier, but my installation of gallery was not cooperating. It appears that a recent update that I installed a day or two ago may have broken a couple of things. So instead I had to add some pictures to my flickr page. I guess this is also a good time to announce that my mom has officially moved her pictures to flickr since yahoo photos is apparently shutting their doors.
Anyway, a local Denver 7-11 store has been converted over to a Kwik-E-Mart to promote the upcoming release of the Simpsons Movie. And given that 7-11 is giving away free squishees today for their 80th birthday I just had to stop in and check it out. I got my free sour apple squishee, took a few pictures, and even bought a six pack of Buzz Cola and a box of KrustyO’s. Click here to see a list of Kwik-E-Marts and see if one is in your area. If not, you can still get a free squishee today from any 7-11 store. If they only had Duff Beer my day would be complete.
Over the weekend we did something that we haven’t done in a long time, watched a movie. Kim had been wanting to see Music and Lyrics since it was in the theaters. Fortunately we didn’t even have to leave the house to watch it as it was available on Comcast On Demand. Typically I cringe at the thought of watching Hugh Grant in a movie, and this was no exception. However, this movie was actually better than I was expecting. I guess it helps going into it with a bad taste in my mouth, but it was actually pretty funny in parts. I’m not going to recommend seeing it, as that would drive up expectations, but if you happen to watch it go into it with low expectations. You might actually be amused.
With spring upon us there is one thing I cannot wait to do, play cornhole. I’ve already seen the boards out at one of friend’s parties here in Denver, but I haven’t busted out our boards yet. Before I can do that the boards need a little work: maybe some new tops, and the legs definitely need to be reattached. Anyway, I wanted to post a link to Cornhole “The Movie”, the mockumentary that is scheduled to be filmed in June 2007. For those in Cincinnati, this may be your chance to be a movie star! Thanks to Amy for the heads up on this.
I attempted to take full advantage of the free HBO promotion on our cable plan the past couple of days. I noticed that five of the six Star Wars movies were available “on demand” (for some reason Episode VI was not available). So while Kim was out of town, I started watching them in order starting with Episode I. It had been awhile since I saw Jar Jar Binks but I was quickly reminded how annoying his voice can be. Sure this isn’t the best of the group, but it does a great job at introducing so many characters that will be seen throughout.
Next up was Episode II, which has a lot more action in it than the first movie. It even includes a butt kicking Yoda. The movie also introduces the relationship between Anakin Skywalker (the future Darth Vader) and Padmé Amidala. It also begins to show Anakin slipping toward the dark side of the force. Both of these are crucial to Episode III, which in the end will reveal that Anakin and Padmé have twin children, Luke and Leia. It also shows Anakin transforming into Darth Vader. Episode III is my favorite of the new trilogy and does an excellent job tying up the loose ends between the first two movies and the next three.
The transition into Episode IV and the original trilogy is very interesting. The time between the release of this film and the third episode (the last made) was nearly 30 years! Obviously there are some differences in the way everything looks, but the plot transitions almost seamlessly. We see Darth Vader almost immediately and then pan to the simple life of Luke Skywalker and watch as everything changes for him. This movie is a classic and definitely one of the tops. The next in the sequence, Episode V, is another one of the tops. And just as I was getting into the whole series, this movie ends and I don’t have a copy of the final episode anywhere. I was hoping to rent it and finish the series, but now I may just wait and try it again after I build a home theater in the basement. I already have my projector now I just need some walls.
We rented movies over the weekend for the first time in a long time, and even signed up for our very own Blockbuster account. We picked two movies but only got around to watching one of them, You, Me and Dupree. Despite all of the bad reviews from the critics, I though the movie was actually pretty funny and entertaining. This isn’t the first time I’ve disagreed though. In fact, I didn’t even attempt to watch the Oscars, especially since I don’t think I’ve seen any of the movies that were nominated. I take that back, I think I saw Little Miss Sunshine awhile back, and if I did it put me to sleep.
I quickly ended my movie drought that I had previously been in for weeks. Toward the end of last week I saw Clerks 2 at the theater and over the weekend I watched a number of movies. Not only did I watch Remember The Titans on network TV, as did Phil, but we picked up a few others from Blockbuster.
Kim had been dying to see Failure To Launch for weeks now, so I finally gave in and watched it with her. Let me now say that it was just as bad and predictable as I had imagined. I recall saying out loud, “It’s obvious she is gonna fall for him.” And she did just that.
My choice of rental was Eight Below. What can I say? I’m a sucker for sled dogs even though I’ve never had one. The movie was actually much better than I was expecting. Watching the dogs on the screen more than the actors was okay with me because they were doing some pretty amazing things. Just as with Remember The Titans, I’m not sure how much of it is actually based on the true story, but I’m sure there are some facts that were preserved.
Overall I think my favorite of the bunch was Remember The Titans, which is disappointing because it was the only one that was free. And to make it worse, everyone else probably saw the movie years ago.
I finally went and saw the latest Kevin Smith movie, Clerks 2, last night. I’ve always been a fan of his movies, especially Mallrats, Dogma, and his first film, Clerks. Kim is not so much of a fan, so I convinced our friend Mike to join me instead. We’ve watched the older movies multiple times at home after coming home from a night out at the bars, so I knew he would appreciate going to see Clerks 2.
Just like in Clerks, the movie takes place primarily in one location. This location is not the Quick Stop as in Clerks, it’s a Mooby‘s Fast Food Restaurant. The two main characters from Clerks are back as the main characters once again, and both Jay and Silent Bob are in there as well. Typically I’m not a big fan of sequels, but this one is worth the money. I know many of my friends have already seen it, some multiple times, but if you have not seen it yet, I recommend doing so if you enjoy the other movies. I would go see it again in the theaters but I don’t feel like paying $8+ again, and besides Cinemark on the plaza isn’t showing it anymore. Last night was, in fact, the last night.
Finally a relaxing weekend. After work on Friday we had a few beers at home before heading down to George Brett’s. We met up with Maria and her friend Elizabeth, who was in town for the weekend. Typically we just have drinks at George’s, but this time we sampled a variety of their food as well. I would highly recommend the Turkey BLT Sandwich or the BBQ Chicken Pizza. After a couple of hours there, we headed home for the night.
Saturday was spent mostly in the apartment. Kim took care of some studying while I worked on the next version of edpaffjr.com. After hours and hours of that, we decided to put together homemade lasagna. The rest of the night was spent eating, drinking some wine, and watching a couple of movies. First up was Kim’s choice, Must Love Dogs. I’ll make my review of this movie short, it was terrible. I don’t think Kim liked it either. We then watched March Of The Penguins, a film that I’ve been wanting to see. I was obviously expecting big things because of the hype that surrounded it last year. Honestly, I was a little let down. It was a good movie but it was far from amazing, after all it is still a documentary. It was made to be shown on omnimax screens across the country.
We started off Sunday exactly like Saturday. Luckily we made it out of the apartment later in the day for more than an hour. We started off with a long game of tennis at the gym. We had planned on doing an inside workout, but the nice weather changed our minds. When we ran out of time, the score was tied one set to one. I was trying to conserve my energy for my hockey game later in the day. I guess I didn’t save enough though, we ended up losing our game and are no longer undefeated. We still hold a one game lead over the team that just beat us.
