As their website says, “The Governor is a modern diner and bar nestled between the centuries-old buildings of bustling Main Street, Milford.” It goes on to say, “The Governor offers breakfast, brunch, and dinner complemented by a deliciously imaginative drink list.”
My wife and I stopped in recently for dinner and found all of this to be true! I tried the celery man 4.0 cocktail with vodka, Cynar, celery bitters, ginger beer, pineapple cucumber juice, and lime ($15 in a pint glass). I really enjoyed this drink, though I didn’t realize it at the time, Cynar is an Italian aperitivo liquor similar to Aperol, and that explains the bit of cloying after-taste. I was good for one glass, but had to switch to a beer for my second drink.
For dinner I enjoyed the Caesar chicken salad sandwich with a smoked chicken salad, tomato, avocado, romaine on a parmesan crusted ciabatta hoagie ($14). This was good but when I saw the Gov Tso chicken sandwich come out of the kitchen for a neighbor I was immediately jealous, so I think I would go that way on a return visit. The menu is pretty extensive and there seems to be something for everyone. We sat at the bar so had a view of everyone’s orders and can safely say the deviled potato skins and lobster roll are some of the most popular items on the menu.
