Will Travel For Music

Last week some members of OARfans.com had a discussion about miles traveled to see O.A.R. concerts.   At some point I decided to calculate my estimated miles traveled using both Google Maps and this WebFlyer calculator.   I already knew that I wasn’t traveling for shows as often as I used to, but when I do travel now it tends to be larger distances.   Currently I’ve been to 90 shows in 15 states (CO, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, MI, MO, NY, OH, PA, TN, VA, WA, WI), thanks oarsa.org.   I quickly realized that my longest road-trip was likely the spring break trip back in ’03 that I took with three others.   Nearly 2,000 miles roundtrip to see seven shows.

The rest of the stats were pretty interesting once I finally calculated them.   The grand total miles that I traveled by car to attend O.A.R. shows while living in Cincinnati was 12,001 miles!   That’s a lot of time spent in the old Mazda MX-6.   This doesn’t include miles for shows in Cincinnati, just estimated miles to other shows out of the city.   This includes the following cities and times visited:
  • Columbus, OH – 11
  • Cleveland, OH – 4
  • Louisville, KY – 3
  • Chicago, IL – 2
  • Indianapolis, IN – 2
  • Pittsburgh, PA – 2
  • Dayton, OH – 1
  • Toledo, OH – 1
  • Urbana, IL – 1
  • Normal, IL – 1
  • Nashville, TN – 1
  • Charlottesville, VA – 1
  • Richmond, VA – 1
  • Detroit, MI – 1
  • Milwaukee, WI – 1
  • Green Bay, WI – 1
  • Ames, IA – 1
  • Crawfordsville, IN – 1
I never flew for a show while living in Cincy.   This was not true after moving to Kansas City, where I drove to some and also flew to some.   To be more specific, I drove 3,549 miles and flew 15,632 miles, for a total of 19,181 miles while in KC.   This included the following cities driven to:
  • St. Louis, MO – 2
  • Cincinnati, OH – 2
  • Columbia, MO – 1
  • Lawrence, KS – 1
  • Ames, IA – 1
  • Columbus, OH – 1
And flown to:
  • New York, NY – 3
  • Chicago, IL – 2
  • Cleveland, OH – 2
  • Indianapolis, IN – 1
  • East Troy, WI (via Chicago) – 1
  • George, WA (via Seattle) – 1

So the trips were already decreasing, but the length increased.   Finally comes miles traveled while living in Denver.   I haven’t traveled much for O.A.R. shows since moving to Denver. I’ve only seen 6 shows in 3 years. Most of these were in Colorado, with only one really outside of the Denver area, in Vail. That was 195 miles roundtrip. With one flight thrown in, the total while living in Denver is only 3,494 miles.   And the grand total is 34,676 miles (15,620 driving and 19,056 flying).   That is a ton of miles!     The nice thing is that all the traveling not only helped introduce me to a large group of friends, it also helped me to see many places in our country that I might not otherwise have visited.

Taste Of KC Pub Crawl

Kim and I took a last-minute flight to Kansas City over the weekend.   We didn’t get in until after nine on Friday, and left yesterday evening, so our time was very limited, but I think we made the most of it.   We hadn’t seen our friends Phil and Doni for a while, and since they can’t make my upcoming birthday weekend trip, we decided to hang with them in KC for the weekend.   The excitement of the trip was primarily contained to Saturday, when we took an all day pub crawl throughout the city.   Phil put together a list of bars to hit this summer with other visitors and we decided to give it a trial run.   We ended up at a couple of spots I’ve never been to before as well as some old watering holes that we used to frequent when living in KC.   Check out Phil’s blog for a full recap of the events.   It was a great weekend trip!

30 Happens In Arizona

In less than two months I will be turning the big 3-0.   To celebrate the big occasion, Kim and I just booked flights to Phoenix for a long weekend.   My parents and my brother have also bought flights and will be joining us.   In addition to Phoenix we hope to see the Grand Canyon, Sedona, and catch a spring training Reds game.   I’m still in the very early planning phases for our stops, so any advice is greatly appreciated.   In addition, let me know if you’d like to join us and I can pass along our travel details.

Hurricanes And Hand Grenades

We arrived into New Orleans around 3pm on New Year’s Eve, thanks to a flight change on United which put us on the first available direct flight.   We weren’t expecting to get in until 5 or 6, but were so glad to get there early.   We dropped our bags at our hotel and immediately headed to the Jackson Brewery area for the Fan Fest and Bearcat Pep Rally.   There we saw the voice of the Bearcats, Dan Hoard, take the stage for the pep rally, along with coaches, players, cheerleaders, and the band.   Along with firing up the crowd and introducing the large gathering of Cincinnati fans to New Orleans, Hoard gave this tidbit of advice, “A hurricane is like a woman’s bosom…one is not enough but three is too many.”   We spent the rest of that night testing that theory with multiple rounds of Hurricanes and some Hand Grenades as well.   I can honestly say that I haven’t seen 5am in a long, long time.

I guess there were some other events thrown into the mix that night, it was New Year’s Eve afterall.   After having some dinner at the Crescent City Brewhouse we met back up with my parents, a large group of their friends, one of my roommates from college, his family, and even more friends.   The black and red of the Bearcats had definitely taken over the streets of New Orleans.   Eventually we made our way over to Jackson Square for the annual NYE celebration there.   We were told of some baby statue that was supposed to fall.   Obviously we thought it would be like the ball in Times Square.   Unfortunately, the baby never fell.   And to make it all worse, we couldn’t even see the fireworks from where we were standing.

Obviously that wasn’t the only letdown of the trip.   After finally making it back to the streets of the French Quarter the next day, we eventually found our way to more of the aforementioned drinks.   This led up to the big team sendoff at the official hotel.   Once again, half of Cincinnati’s population was inside the hotel and flooding out into Canal Street.   Eventually the team all made their way on to the buses and en route to the big game.   After the first bus pulled away, I was able to see the large crowd that was also gathered on the other side of the street.   Everyone went crazy at that sight.   It was shortly after this when the biggest letdown came.

We all grabbed a couple more drinks and headed off toward the Super Dome for the big game against Florida.   There is no need to tailgate in a lot, as you can legally drink on the street of New Orleans, as long as you use a plastic cup.   Plus all the tourist stops and even the stadiums are within easy walking distance.   We arrived at the dome and made our way all the way up to the last row in the place to find our seats.   Yes, this was pretty disappointing, but we were surprised at how well we could see.   It wasn’t until the next day, after I could barely walk, that I realized just why the sight-lines were so good, the stairs up to the seats were gigantic.

And then the big disappointment finally came.   The game started off great, with the Cincinnati fans easily doubling the number of Florida fans.   This energy even transferred to the team with a great opening drive for the Cats.   But after a great run, a holding penalty sent the team back to their own side of the field and it all went downhill from there.   I’m sure many people saw it, if you weren’t there in person, so I probably don’t have to give a play-by-play.   It was a disappointing game, but I think everyone there was proud of how far the team had made it.   We could have easily taken off our red and black, but I continued to see it throughout the streets for the following two days.

The day after the game was Saturday, and we weren’t leaving until Sunday, so we once again spent the day walking around the French Quarter.   We first made it down to the French Market area, and then worked our way back north to Royal where we enjoyed some of the street performers, and later back to Bourbon Street for even more of those colorful drinks.   We actually spent a good chunk of time at Pat O’Brien’s this day, out on the patio, enjoying the sunshine.   The weather was pretty awesome the entire time we were there, but I can imagine that it could be pretty hot and muggy in the heart of summer.

We had an evening flight out yesterday, so again spent time exploring the River Walk, some of the Central Business District, and eventually back to the action on Royal and Bourbon.   The crowds were obviously thinning out quite a bit, but I was still shocked to see people enjoying more and more drinks.   I knew that my body had already had enough.   Though I did buy a package of hurricane mix from a souvenir shop, so I can try to make my own sometime in the future.   I’ll probably wait for the summer, as the snow back here in Denver doesn’t put you in the mood for the fruity drinks.   When we do give it a try, I’m sure I’ll be quickly reminded of our great trip to New Orleans and all the great times shared with our closest 25,000 family and friends.

New Orleans on Dwellable
Peace Garden State

As I mention on Friday, Kim and I spent the weekend in Grand Forks, North Dakota.   Kim was doing some work and I joined her for a couple of University of North Dakota hockey games.   The Ralph Engelstad Arena is just as nice as I pictured it to be.   The outside of the building is all brick with many Fighting Sioux logos throughout.   The inside is just as lavish, with marble throughout, every seat is leather, and a scoreboard that could put some pro-level arenas to shame.

The hockey was exciting, just as I expected.   I’ve always been a fan of college hockey.   The University of Wisconsin started off the scoring in the first game and took a 2-0 lead at the end of the first.   The Sioux made a comeback in the second, with the score 3-2 Wisconsin at the end.   And finally the Sioux evened the score in the third, where it stood until the end of regulation.   The overtime action was thrilling, but neither team scored and the game ended in a 3-3 tie.

The second game started off better for the Sioux, as they scored the first goal of the game and had a 2-1 lead at the end of the first.   Then Wisconsin turned it on in the second, scoring two goals and taking the lead 3-2.     The third period was back and forth, and eventually each team scored, and the game ended with a 4-3 win for Wisconsin.   The Sioux players and fans were visibly upset.   The players had a few minor skirmishes after the game, and the tension heated up between the Badger and Sioux fans that were seated on either side of us.   Fortunately, it all ended with handshakes on the ice.

Outside of the games, we didn’t do much while in North Dakota.   It was freezing cold the entire time we were there, often with temperatures never getting above zero degrees Fahrenheit.   We mostly spent our free time running on the treadmills in the hotel, trying to catch up in the quest for 100 miles.   We also did some shopping and ate at some local restaurants.   The only one worth mentioning was Rhombus Guys pizza, which Kim and I both thoroughly enjoyed.

North Dakota on Dwellable
Lucky Seven

Not much has happened this week, besides working on our plans for the big Sugar Bowl weekend in New Orléans.   As I mentioned, I finally bought flights on Monday (which I found out actually dropped in price since, grrrr).   I spent my free time yesterday working on a hotel, and thanks to my brother we now have a reservation at the Hampton Inn downtown.   We also got tickets for the game through a family friend, so pretty much all of our travel arrangements are complete.   I was finally able to breathe a little today.   I can’t believe that I will only have seven states left to visit at the end of the year.   I hope I can knock out the rest next year.

Sugar Bowl Bound

This post is late today because I spent all of my free time looking for flights to New Orleans. If you missed the insanely exciting University of Cincinnati football win over Pitt this weekend, the Bearcats are now heading to play in the Sugar Bowl on New Years Day against Florida. I have never been to Louisiana before, so this was too good of an opportunity to pass up.

Happy 30th Kim!

Our celebration weekend for Kim’s birthday started off early with a 5am alarm. We got to the airport and met up with our friends Phil and Doni, who had flown from Kansas City and were on the same flight we were down to Cabo San Lucas. Nothing of note happened on the flight, and we  quickly made our way through customs and found our prearranged shuttle driver. We waited for another couple to show up, which they never did, and soon enough we were on our way to the resort, Riu Palace.

We were handed a drink before we could even check-in and I knew this was going to be a great stay. We were able to check into our rooms early, and after dropping off our bags we all met up at the pool. The resort had two large pools, with a swim-up bar close to each. Shortly after our arrival we found our friends Chris and Kelly who came down to Cabo a few days earlier for a longer celebration of their wedding anniversary.

The next few days we spent lounging by the pool, eating lots of food, enjoying all sorts of various drinks, and having a great time. I think this is pretty much what everyone does at these all-inclusive resorts. We never left until our last full day there, when we took a walk along the beach to see some of the oceanfront bars as well as some of the downtown establishments, including Cabo Wabo and Slim’s Elbow Room.

Compared with the resort we stayed at in Playa del Carmen a couple years ago, I think the food was better this time, as were the pools.   I thought the other resort had better rooms, though these at the Riu are still pretty nice.   We didn’t really spend much time outside of the resorts, but from the little that we did I would have to give the advantage to Cabo over Playa del Carmen.   It was a great trip and I’m sure that the others with us would all agree.   Thanks for helping us to celebrate Kim’s big day.   Some pictures of the trip are below, and be sure to read Phil’s recap of the weekend.

Need Vacation After Vacation

We are back from vacation, but my blog is not.   Kim is officially in her 30’s, so let the countdown begin until my big day.   I’m hoping to get some pictures up by tomorrow.   For now, back to work.
