Jordan Styx 1983-2007

Late yesterday I heard that a friend of mine from OARfans.com had passed away due to injuries suffered in a car accident. I am still in as much shock as I was when I first found out and am finding myself pretty speechless about the whole thing. Jordan was truly a great person and it’s sad that his life was cut so short. There are so many times that I can recall him being the life of the party, bringing smiles to so many faces, and just living his life to the fullest. He had done so much in such a short time and will truly be missed by so many people. The messages that are being left on his myspace page are truly touching and show just how many lives he touched. Here is a news article from a Chicago newspaper that details the story of his passing. We’ll miss you JordanWho, the breakdancing ninja.

I Need More Vacation

Most of Kim’s family members are currently up in Estes Park, Colorado which is near the eastern entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. So while I’m sitting at my desk logging into work, Kim is out with them enjoying all of the wonderful things to do in and around the park and the rocky mountains. So far they’ve done a biking trip and I believe they plan to go white water rafting tomorrow. Needless to say, I am extremely jealous. However, I am going to meet up with tonight to grab some dinner and hang out for a little bit. If only I had more vacation days…

Ride The Equinox

Last night we dropped off Kim’s old company car and picked up the new one! The car that she was driving around (Mercury Sable) was nearing the end of it’s life, and instead of fixing it up they just decided to get her a new one. Obviously there were no complaints from us. They gave her the choice of a Chevrolet Equinox or some style of Buick. Obviously with the weather and mountains in Denver, the choice was easy. We went with the Equinox, which is an all wheel drive crossover SUV.

The color we picked is called Granite Gray Metallic and was the darkest shade of gray available to us. The highlights so far are the all wheel drive (although we haven’t had to use it yet), the spacious interior, and an auxiliary input jack on the stereo, which makes it very easy to hook up our Sirius receiver or an mp3 player. It drives really smoothly and has quite a bit of power. There is even a towing package on it, so now we just need some snowmobiles or a small speed boat.

Happy Birthday Bry

Today would have been my brother Bryan’s 20th birthday. It hasn’t been an easy ninth months for myself and my family without Bry. We all miss him dearly and will always remember and think of him. Happy 20th birthday Bry, you are no longer a teenager…

The Snow Is Back

I think I spoke too early yesterday. I woke up to around a half foot of snow on the ground this morning, and it isn’t showing any signs of slowing down! There goes all the flowers that have been blooming lately. On the plus side, we have plans to snowboard this weekend which could be our last time of the season. Fresh powder will definitely be a bonus for us. It is currently 28 degrees outside, welcome back to winter I guess. The funny thing is that weather.com is still reporting high pollen counts for our area. It also says there is a chance of thunder this afternoon. Is this the apocalypse?

Allergy Superburst

With our early spring comes what experts are calling a pollen superburst, meaning that trees, flowers, weeds, etc are all going to pollinate at the same time. Typically there is a sequence with trees pollinating first, then flowers, and finally weeds. I can tell you that I am already starting to feel the effects of this allergy season, even though I’ve been taking Claritin pretty much year round. Today I am fairly congested and have the occasional sneeze. I know that my allergies are throughout the spectrum: lots of tree pollen, and a handful of weeds. The superburst could definitely spell trouble for me. Fortunately working from home allows me to stay inside all day if I want.

Almost Spring

I commented on the weather a week ago, and since then it has been wonderful outside. Most of our Sunday was spent outside in and around Washington Park. I think all of Denver was there with us, but the park is so big that there is plenty of room for everyone. Looking forward, the weather looks like it will continue to be just as nice, with most of our high temperatures in the 60s. In addition, it doesn’t look like the temperatures will dip below freezing again anytime in the near future.

I noticed some flowers popping up in the front yard. I just went outside to snap a couple of pictures of them, but found the yellow one had wilted already. Fortunately the purple ones are still looking great! I noticed some other purple ones growing in the grass, but I think they are weeds. I also snapped a couple pictures of some of the house plants, which are mostly bouncing back from the move. Spring is in the air!

Pass The Sunscreen

The weather has been awesome lately. For the first time, just about all of the snow on the ground is gone. This is surprising to me, as everyone always says that March is the snowiest month for Denver. Just take a look at this forecast…

Weather

Hopefully I can find the time to sneak outside this afternoon.

Will It Ever End?

Today marks the 50th consecutive day with snow on the ground in Denver. And guess what? It was just snowing a little more. This current streak is now the 3rd longest streak in history. The 2nd longest was 60 days between December 1, 1913 and January 29, 1914. The longest streak was 63 days between November 26, 1983 and January 27, 1984. This current streak started on December 21, after a massive blizzard of 21+ inches. For the current record to be broken, snow would need to be on the ground until February 22nd. Keep your fingers crossed, I guess.

The measurement today was 6 inches, so we still have a long way to go. Here is the listing of the snow depth from each of the past 50 days. There is also an additional news story on www.thedenverchannel.com.
